Professor Francisco de Caso

Professor Francisco de Caso is a highly regarded structural engineer and chief scientist at the University of Miami in the College of Engineering (Dept of Civil & Architectural Engineering).  His work has focused on implementing the use of non-metallic (composite materials) for structural reinforcement, including glass, basalt, and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) rebar.  This are non-corrosive structural concrete reinforcement that provide longer service life than traditional steel rebar, resulting in significantly lower maintenance costs.  FRP rebar has been adopted by the IBC 2024.
