After the Storm: Building for High Wind Resistance

The strength of a building is a function of all building components – roof, walls, floors and foundation – working together as a unit. Load paths may not be obvious at first glance. Knowing where to look for clues when tracking the load path through the building is vital to ensuring load path continuity and overall construction quality. This session will provide a top-to-bottom overview of gravity and lateral design for wood framed structures, including examples of complete and incomplete load paths. Using real-life examples of damage during wind storms as a reference, you will understand how wind forces affect the load path from roof to foundation and learn simple, cost-effective construction methods to improve structural performance.
